Social media marketing refers to the process of gaining attention and sales via social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram, or Twitter.
Social media marketing can now be divided into two groups: organic (free) and paid.
Organic Social Media Marketing
Organic social media marketing is about building relationships and a community with customers in order to increase interest and customer loyalty.
There are many ways to accomplish this. Let’s look at some.
Your brand can be positioned as an authority in your field. Engaging other people in conversations and sharing valuable insights is a great way to achieve this.

Responding immediately to customer inquiries on social media shows your brand’s authenticity and inspires others to trust your products and services.
Social media marketing is also closely tied to content marketing, which we’ll discuss next. Social media platforms offer a great place to share valuable content with your niche and community.
Ok, but what about advertisements on social media?
Paid Social Media Marketing
Paid social media marketing can be used in many ways to promote your company. Each platform offers its own set of promotional options.
You can either pay to promote existing organic posts or to create a Facebook ad specifically tailored to your marketing goals.
The majority of paid social media marketing can also be referred to “pay-per click” (which we’ll discuss in greater detail below).

2. Search Engine Optimization (SEO).
SEO, also known as search engine optimization, is the process of optimizing websites to increase search engine rankings. This in turn maximizes visitors to a webpage.
This means that you want your office furniture website to be at the top of Google’s search results when someone searches “office furniture in London”. SEO is the method you would use.
It is worth noting, however, that SEO today almost exclusively refers to Google (unless you are in China and use Baidu).
Google is the most used search engine in the world, accounting for 79.77% market share.
How does SEO work?
Search engines use “crawler bots” (search engine crawlers) to scan the internet and create an index of all the content online.
Thus, when someone searches for a keyword, the search engine will attempt to return the most relevant and useful results.
There are two sides of SEO: on-page and offpage.
What is On-Page SEO?
On-page SEO refers to optimizing your website or content for higher ranking in search engines for specific keywords or phrases.
Here are some examples of on-page optimization:
- Speed up your website
- A responsive and mobile-optimized website design is essential
- Including your targeted keywords
- Structure content using title tags
- Optimizing for Google’s featured Snippets
- Structured data markup
- Include internal links to other pages of your website
- Add outbound links to other websites relevant
SEO is therefore closely linked to content marketing. We’ll discuss this further below.
What is Off-Page SEO?
Off-page SEO refers to optimizing your website or content for higher search results using methods other than your website.
These external signals include brand mentions and social media presence.
The generation of backlinks is however the most important part of off-page optimization. This refers to when other websites link directly to your website.
Backlinks are simple to understand.
Google will assume that you have valuable, relevant content if there are many websites linking to your site.
Search engines also consider the authority of any website linking to you. One link from the New York Times, for example, will be more powerful than 100 links from unknown websites.
High-quality content is a great way to get backlinks to authoritative websites.
You can also create content dedicated to another website. This is known as “guest posting.”
3. Content Marketing
Content marketing refers to the practice of creating and distributing relevant online materials that are strategically designed to engage and convert your target market.
Businesses can use a variety of content to accomplish this.
- Blog posts
- Videos are shared on social media platforms such as Facebook and YouTube.
- Research and reports on the industry
- Infographics summarize reports and studies
- Case studies

First, let’s clarify: What is an influencer exactly?
A person with a large online following is known as an influencer.
- Emma Watson is a mainstream celebrity.
- Magnus Carlsen, the world champion in chess, is one example of a niche celebrity.
- Experts and authorities in the industry, like Neil Patel, digital marketing expert.
- Micro-influencers are those with less than 100,000 followers, such as Elizabeth Couse, an environmentalist.
So what is influencer marketing?
Influencer marketing refers to the act of working with influential people to promote a product/service to their online followers.
Let’s take a look at a Vital Proteins example.
The food supplement brand has partnered with influential people to reach young, fashion-conscious, and health-conscious women.
Influencer Meredith Foster is promoting Vital Proteins via her Instagram account.
Influencer marketing was not available before the advent of internet marketing. It was only for large brands that could afford to work alongside big-name celebrities.
However, anyone can now engage in influencer marketing.
Influence.co discovered that micro-influencers who have between 2,000 and 100,000 followers typically charge $137 to $258 for each Instagram post.
This is on average. That means some may charge $50 and many others will gladly promote your product in return for a sample.
Or, businesses may choose to pay an influencer a percentage of the sales they generate – this is known as affiliate marketing (which will be covered in the next section).

Collective Bias conducted a survey and found that only three percent of consumers were influenced by celebrity endorsements when making purchase decisions. However, 30% of consumers are more likely to buy a product suggested by a non-celebrity blogger.

5. Affiliate Marketing
Affiliate marketing can be described as online referral marketing.
A program is a business’s way of paying commissions to other websites and individuals for traffic they generate.
This allows influencers and internet marketers to make money by promoting the products or services of other businesses.
Let’s take a look at an example.
Bluehost, a domain registrar and website host, has a popular affiliate program that allows internet marketers and influencers to make money by promoting its services.
The Minimalists blog promotes Bluehost affiliate links in their articles.
Bluehost gives The Minimalists a cut for every reader who clicks on the link and signs-up.
Affiliate marketing is interconnected with content marketing, social media marketing, influencer marketing and other forms of marketing. Influencers are the ones who promote affiliate links in content and on social media.

6. Email Marketing
Email marketing refers to the use of email to send marketing messages directly to customers in an effort gain new customers or retain existing customers.
Email marketing may not be the most glamorous type of internet marketing but don’t underestimate its power.
Email marketing has a median return of investment of 122 per cent – more fourfold greater than other forms of internet marketing, such as paid search and social media.
So how does email marketing work?
You need to have some email addresses before you can start email marketing!

Email marketing campaigns often begin with something called a lead magnet – which is simply a fancy way to say “bait”.
The bait is typically a coupon code or a piece of content that is highly desirable, such an ebook.

This is where the real fun begins.
Once you have captured email addresses, it is possible to start to nurture your subscribers with useful content and giveaways. You can also offer early access to new products or early access to existing products.
Email segmentation can be used to increase sales.
This is where you create different groups of subscribers (“segments”) that are based on each subscriber’s personal preferences and at what stage in the buyer’s journey.
You can then create automated email marketing campaigns for each segment.

7. Paid advertising
Paid advertising, a type of internet marketing, is where advertisers pay to have their ads appear on search engines and other online platforms like Facebook, YouTube and LinkedIn.
Paid advertising is also known as “pay per click” or “PPC”. This means that advertisers pay a fee every time a user clicks one of their ads.
Paid advertising is more than PPC.
Many platforms charge advertisers in different ways, depending on their marketing goals.
- Cost-per-thousand-impressions (also known as “cost-per-mille” or “CPM”). This means that you will be charged for each 1,000th view of your ad.
- Cost-per-view (CPV). This means that you will be charged for every view of your video.
- Cost-per-action (CPA) (also know as cost-per-acquisition). This means that you will be charged every time a user performs a particular action or converts to a customer.
Google and Facebook are the two largest digital advertising platforms. They receive 38 percent and 19% of U.S. digital advertising spend respectively.
Let’s take a look at each one.
Paid advertising on Google
You must bid on keywords terms that you wish to advertise on Google.
You can, for example, bid to have your Google Adwords ad appear for the keyword “standing desk.”
If you win the bid, your advertisement will appear in search results for “standing desk” if someone searches it on Google.
Paid advertising on search engines such as Google is commonly referred to by the terms “search engine marketing” or “SEM”.
SEM has the advantage of allowing searchers to have high levels of buyer intent. Consider this: If someone searches for “standing desk”, it is highly probable that they are interested in purchasing one.
Paid advertising on Facebook
Facebook lets you display your ads to a targeted audience.
Your target audience can be defined by their demographics, interests and behaviors. There are many ways to apply filters.
You can drill down to identify your perfect customers and then use Facebook ads for them.
Retargeting (also known by remarketing) is another option.
